“The half marathon is the fastest growing portion,” said race committee chairman Dave Dunleavy. “It’s a stepping stone for a marathon. People get to challenge themselves more and see how they feel.”

Standouts from the half marathon include Demesse Tefera, a 29-year-old who also won the 2010 race. He beat his 2010 time by .17 seconds and the runner up, Girma Serni, by almost a minute. “The wind really is in your face,” Tefera said. “That does have an effect on the times you run.”

In the 5k race, siblings Sabrina and Michael Rautter were all the buzz. Sabrina ranked first among the females and her brother placed fifth overall. The race attracted many school running clubs and cross-training teams.

The Stratton Faxon races had something for the whole family. With a half-mile kids run and DJs and bands spread throughout the course, everyone was entertained. “It’s a great way to draw the entire family,” said Dunleavy. “My favorite thing of the day is to watch the kids zipping down toward Rogers Park and then turning around and coming back down to the finish line. They really enjoy it.”

The races began at Rogers Park and finished right in front of the War Memorial. “It’s not an easy race,” said Dunleavy. “People say they love the course.” A lot of people comment on the difficulty near the nine-mile mark with the challenging hill on Long Ridge Road.

Stratton Faxon Law Firm has sponsored the event for many years. The firm enjoys being a part of the community they serve and also has lawyers who love to run. Connecticut personal injury attorney Joel Faxon and three of his kids ran. “It’s great to feel a sense of togetherness and everyone wants to accomplish the goal of keeping motivated, running their best, and enjoying the day,” said Faxon, who is the cofounder and partner of Stratton Faxon.
