Seguin Industrial Accident Illustrates Workplace Risks to Metalworkers

Waxahachie, TX (Law Firm Newswire) September 24, 2014 – Two workers at the CMC Steel Texas plant in Seguin were injured in an industrial accident at the plant’s melt shop.

A spilled ladle of molten metal caused both men to suffer severe thermal burns. Both were airlifted to the nearest hospital, one man with burns covering more than 60 percent of his body.

“Most metalworkers are experts at what they do, yet they face serious risks every day,” commented John Hale, a personal injury attorney. “That is why the companies who employ them are under a legal and moral obligation to provide safe equipment and up-to-date protective gear.”

No word has been released yet as to whether any safety conditions at the company contributed to the accident. CMC Steel Texas did evacuate all workers initially after the accident in order to determine if immediate conditions were safe for the remaining workers.

Data from the Western Journal of Medicine (WJM) shows that burns caused by molten metal are far more serious than the average burn. While an average thermal burn keeps workers away from work for five days, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), WJM notes that molten metal burns result in hospital stays averaging 17 days.

BLS states that in 2012, more than 16,000 U.S. workers suffered serious on-the-job thermal burns.

“Burn injuries, especially those from molten metal, cause serious long-term consequences, both personally and financially,” said Hale. “Hopefully, these victims will receive the compensation and support that they need.”
