The Florida Injury Report Podcast from Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers

Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) July 15, 2015 – It was reported in a podcast that Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, which is part of St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, has a death rate from open heart surgery that is more than three times the national average.

As a result of this alarming discovery, St. Mary’s Medical Center is now the subject of a federal investigation.

Although St. Mary’s does not disclose its death rates, CNN was able to obtain them by filing a Freedom of Information request, and communicating with the families of children who lost their lives during open heart surgery. The physicians at St. Mary’s performed 48 open heart surgeries on children and babies between 2011 and 2013. Since the start of the Pediatric Open Heart Surgery program, there have been nine deaths, and one child became paralyzed after having had surgery.

The attorneys at Chalik & Chalik Injury Lawyers have stated, “If your child suffered an injury or died as a result of having had open heart surgery, you should consult an attorney who can help you recover damages for your child’s injuries, or compensation for your loss.”

In an attempt to conduct a review of the hospital’s program, in 2014, the Florida Department of Health sent a team of proficient heart physicians to the medical center. It was recommended by Dr. Jeffrey Jacobs, the head of the panel, that the doctors at the hospital cease performing such surgeries on children younger than six months. However, they did not heed his suggestion, and resumed performing such surgeries.

The most recent victim of open heart surgery at the hospital was Davo Ricardo Brandel, who died on June 2, 2015. At the time at which he underwent open heart surgery in March, he was only a few weeks old. Due to the disturbing revelations uncovered by the CNN report, the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid initiated an investigation to ensure that people do not suffer exposure to anymore harm. The reason that the agency is conducting the investigation is that the majority of the patients who are treated at the hospital were Medicaid patients.
