15-Year-Old Girl Attempts Suicide, Later Dies of Injuries

Southfield, MI (Law Firm Newswire) March 15, 2017 – A 15-year-old girl attempted to take her own life while in a pediatric inpatient psychiatric unit.

The suicide attempt was not successful and the facility where she was staying implemented CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to resuscitate her. She was transferred to a local hospital, but died two months later from injuries she sustained during the attempt to kill herself.

The young girl’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the psychiatric unit, alleging negligence that led to her death. The lawsuit alleged the teen’s death was due to the negligence of staff members failing to exercise due care and attention in treating, monitoring and supervising her in light of her suicidal thoughts and depression.

The defendants in this lawsuit filed a motion to force a clinical therapist at the psychiatric unit to release treatment records for the teen. They were attempting to understand the nature of the relationship between the teen and her father. Apparently the father had received mental health treatment prior to and subsequent to his daughter’s death. The defendants considered that to be relevant since the family was suing for negligence and damages that can include compensation for, among other things, “loss of love and companionship of a child.”
