Ex-NYPD Sergeant Faces 28 Years in Prison for Child Pornography

New York, NY(Law Firm Newswire) June 5, 2017 – A former sergeant of the New York Police Department (NYPD) was sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of receiving child pornography and two counts of conspiracy to sexually exploit a child. A federal judge also sentenced him to eight years of supervised release following his prison sentence.

Alberto Randazzo, 40, convinced women to sexually abuse babies and children up to age 8 to help him make pornography online. He instructed them to send him images and videos of the sexual acts. Prosecutors named five women who complied with Randazzo’s requests. Two women pleaded guilty to the charges, with one receiving a five-year prison sentence.

Randazzo, who supervised police officers as a NYPD sergeant for 15 years, is also required to register as a sex offender. According to court documents from 2013, he used Skype to direct child pornography videos. He told moms to molest their children so that he could watch and sometimes film the abuse.

Prosecutors said the former sergeant targeted women from 2010 to 2013 on websites such as Match.com and Ashley Madison. He even traveled outside New York to watch an 8-year-old victim and another child being molested in person.

Randazzo was caught when his then-girlfriend found emails containing homemade child pornography as well as alarming text messages on his cell phone. He was arrested in February 2013 after she contacted the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau. Investigators recovered numerous images and videos of children being sexually abused from Randazzo’s Queens apartment.

Randazzo initially faced state charges in Queens Criminal Court. However, Department of Homeland Security agents found that he was downloading child pornography while on bail. As a result, federal charges were later filed against him.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bridget Rohde said in a statement that Randazzo “lived a double life, publicly serving as an NYPD police officer while privately engaging in conduct to exploit the most vulnerable members of the community — our children.”
