Steinberg Law Firm Offers Probono Wills to Support Undervalued Community Workers
Charleston, SC (Law Firm Newswire) November 10, 2017 – Beginning November 3 and going through January 2018, the Steinberg Law Firm is offering a Free Will Clinic for firefighters, police officers and emergency medical service (EMS) workers.
The firm wishes to honor the commitment these workers have put forth in the community. They have commonly been found to have zero Simple Wills, Power of Attorneys, Healthcare Power of Attorneys and Living Wills. The Steinberg Law Firm wants to counteract these shortcomings by making these services accessible for each worker’s unique situation, reducing the unacceptable gap in this field of sacrifice and utmost loyalty.
On the first day of the Steinberg Law Firm’s Pro Bono Will Clinic, the Summerville Police Department received nearly a dozen wills and healthcare powers of attorney. Attorney Kelly Alfreds leads the program along with the assistance of attorneys: Kevin Holmes, Catherine Meehan and Joshua Giancola. The paralegals in the personal injury firm’s Summerville office acted as witnesses and notaries for the police officers. Attorney Alfreds lead a similar program in the winter of 2014 alongside Summerville Attorney Steven Goldberg, where dozens of police officers received wills free of charge.
The personal injury law firm aims to continue to fill these essential gaps in the lives of our local first responders. The Lowcountry Firefighter & EMS Support Team has recently been announced as a recipient of The Steinberg Law Firm Community Fund Program. The team was awarded $1,000 to pay for weighted blankets that help with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Steinberg Law Firm’s own attorney, Michael J. Jordan, proudly presented the award to the team after giving his own support to the Lowcountry EMS and firefighters. This past May, he sponsored the Lowcountry Firefighter & EMS Support Team’s fourth annual golf tournament to raise funds for the organization. The firm is thrilled to provide local paramedics and firefighters with the essential documents needed to protect their families.
The Lowcountry Firefighter & EMS Support Team began after the Charleston tragedy, when nine firefighters sacrificed their lives in a Sofa Super Store fire. This incident raised a new awareness of how firefighters, police officers and EMS workers have not been offered any plan of coverage for their families in the tragic event of death on the job. The situation also highlighted the necessity to improve training from outside to reach national standards, rather than just providing internal support. They also strengthened the team with equipment changes.
Though the incident was a traumatic loss for the team, it provided the necessary push towards higher expectations as well as forced a realistic approach on the public. The Steinberg Law Firm wants to help the Lowcountry Firefighter & EMS Support Team and all first responders by making these goals possible.Steinberg Law Firm 61 Broad St Charleston, SC 29401 Phone: (843) 720-2800 118 S Goose Creek Blvd Goose Creek, SC 29445 Phone: (843) 572-0700 103 Grandview Drive Summerville, SC 29483 Phone: (843) 871-6522
