Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) May 12, 2020 – The Department of Veterans Affairs has begun utilizing Mobile Vet Centers to increase outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic. The units were first deployed the week of March 16th and started in cities hardest hit by the virus, like New York City. Other units were then sent to San Francisco, New Orleans and Los Angeles.

The VA Mobile Vet Centers provide counseling directly to veterans and can coordinate care with brick and mortar VA and community healthcare facilities when necessary. These facilities offer services beyond those that are available in the Mobile Vet Centers, such as individual, group, marriage and family counseling.

“It is an unfortunate reality that some veterans will be deeply affected by the social distancing orders currently in effect, and both mental and physical health will suffer as a result,” said James G. Fausone, lead attorney at Legal Help for Veterans in Northville, Michigan a VA disability law firm just for veterans. “They may be extra vulnerable to isolation and the closure of community services and businesses that provide everyday help and socialization.”

It is these individuals who may not typically seek out mental healthcare from VA facilities that the Mobile Vet Centers target. Besides the mental health services they provide, the centers also try to recognize and meet other needs for the veterans they serve.

The professionals staffing the Mobile Vet Centers work on a volunteer basis for these missions. The Mobile Vet Centers are dispatched during times of crisis, such as after natural disasters, catastrophic weather events, shootings and other times of increased need.

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Mobile Vet Centers will be in use. Volunteers working at the centers use extreme caution when engaging with the public, taking recommended social distancing measures and using protective equipment. The safety of both staff and veterans is of the utmost importance to these facilities.
