For 129 years the members serving the Boonton area have volunteered their time to protect and educate Boonton residents about fire safety. The department answers over two hundred calls a year and can find themselves fighting structure fires, responding to car crashes, carbon monoxide alarms and brush fires. There is not an emergency that they have not been to over the years. All members of the Boonton Fire Department are on call 24/7 all year round.
Mr. Baker indicated that the department does not just do firefighting work, all members of the department also volunteer their time for community education, especially during Fire Protection Week. Members visit schools and teach children about fire safety. Those volunteers also spend a significant number of hours training for their volunteer jobs.
The Boonton Fire Department has come a long way since its inception almost 114 years ago. The Iron Works at Boonton, no longer in existence, had a large bell in their entrance of the Works. It tolled morning, noon and night as the workers came and went during their workday. The bell was also used to signal fires or accidents. The bell was heard for the last time in 1906 when the Works burned. Now, the fire department is efficient, organized and modern, able to offer the best fire protection and firefighting methods.
