Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits A Needed Parachute, Notes Tampa Social Security Lawyer

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) December 12, 2012 – A recent survey shows that most people support Social Security Disability Insurance .
The survey, conducted by Lincoln Park Strategies, discovered that 83 percent of the 1,000 U.S. citizens polled agreed that any Social Security Disability Insurance benefit cuts would be an unfair policy shift. Eight percent of those polled in a survey commissioned by the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives (NOSSCR) said they favored a reduction in benefits available to eligible disabled workers.
Most poll respondents indicated that they would prefer that Washington lawmakers kept their focus on budget cuts which were from other federal programs. NOSSCR works to defend cuts to SSDI and educate the public, as well as government officials, that disability benefits are not an entitlement program. The eligibility for SSDI includes proof that an individual has worked enough to qualify for the benefits.
“Social Security Disability Insurance benefits grant an individual a much-needed parachute,” agrees Tampa Social Security lawyer David W. Magann.
More than 80 percent of the people surveyed said they continued to support Social Security Disability Insurance even though during the recent election they had heard numerous negative ads stating that that Social Security Disability Insurance was part of a government handout system gone wrong. Support for SSDI includes both sides of the political arena, including a reported 75 percent support rate from Republicans.
NOSSCR also stated that the increased number of applications for SSDI is due, in large part, to the aging population and medical breakthroughs, which allow people to successfully survive what were previously regarded as fatal conditions and are not due to high unemployment rates. Also, disability benefits are too low to provide any sort of “disincentive” to return to the workforce for those who are able-bodied enough to do so. Additionally, far from being an entitlement program, as some critics claim, obtaining SSDI approval is a highly complex process, based in large part on objective medical evidence.
If there are any questions about applying for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, it is prudent to work with a Social Security attorney well-versed in navigating the system.
