New Phishing Scheme Affecting Social Security Disability Recipients

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) May 10, 2018 – A new scheme is targeting social security recipients nationwide. The Social Security Administration(SSA) and the Office of the Inspector General(OIG) received reports of the “imposter phishing” scam from concerned citizens.
One method criminals have been using to trick social security disability recipients into revealing their social security numbers is by calling and pretending to be a Social Security employee. The imposter informs the recipient their social security account has been hacked, and the agency is freezing their SSN assets. They then ask the recipient to provide their social security number, alleging they need the information for verification purposes.
“It is inconceivable there are people cruel enough to prey on unsuspecting disability recipients, like has been done on several occasions in Florida. It sickens me. This latest scheme is a great reminder to be suspicious of calls from people you don’t know telling you what could be an outrageous lie. If I can be of service to anyone who has been exposed to this unimaginable scheme, I want to help,” says David W. Magann, a social security disability attorney in Brandon, Florida.
In response to the scam, which has resulted in at least two Orlando-area women being contacted, the Acting Inspector General issued a statement in early March saying, in part, “This phishing scheme is targeting unsuspecting persons for the purpose of Social Security benefit theft or identity theft.”
The Acting Inspector General urged Floridians to be cautious about divulging personal information, such as their SSN or bank account numbers, to unknown people over the telephone or the internet.
