3D Implants May Help Treat Penetrating Traumatic Brain Injuries

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) December 24, 2019 – Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sudden damage to the brain caused by physical impact. Traumatic brain injuries have devasting effects on the health and well-being of injured people. These types of injuries can also result in death. Treatment of TBIs is often challenging. A new development may soon be able to help treat TBIs – 3D printable implants.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO,) TBIs result in a large number of deaths and permanent disabilities. The medical cost for care for U.S. patients with TBIs can reach about $76 billion each year.
A New York-based biotech start-up, Qrons, recently signed an Intellectual Property (IP) license agreement with Dartmouth College in New Hampshire to develop 3D printable implants to treat penetrating TBIs. Qrons now has an exclusive worldwide license of intellectual property associated with 3D printable materials in animal and human health.
“Traumatic brain injuries are increasingly common,” outlined Austin traumatic brain injury attorney, Brooks Schuelke. “Expanding treatment options for TBI patients is encouraging.”
This new technology is being developed to make treatment of TBIs easier. Traumatic brain injuries are challenging to treat because every injury is unique, different in size, in a different location, and has a different spread and shape. Moreover, penetrating injuries damage brain tissue, and non-penetrating injuries cause diffuse neuronal disruption.
To repair TBIs, Qrons researchers found that each injury site needs to receive a non-stop flow of neuro-protective, neuro-regenerative agents (smart gels). This will prevent further damage and prompt neurons to travel to the injury site, regenerate brain tissue and regrow axonal processes.
Qrons is developing genetically modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which will safely drive the TBI repair process. To achieve this, Qrons is using a patented process to build injury-specific 3D printable implants for TBIs.
