Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) February 8, 2020 – A 42-year-old man died in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident in Chicago, Illinois, while he was returning home from watching a Chicago Bears football game with friends.

Eric Smith was riding a motorcycle at around 2 a.m. when he was struck by an alleged drunk driver in a car. He was thrown off his motorcycle upon impact. Smith’s girlfriend, KaSandra Hunt, saw the crash in the rearview mirror of her SUV while driving ahead of him. The accident occurred when they were slowing down as Smith’s motorcycle needed gas.

“Getting behind the wheel of a car when you are intoxicated not only puts your life at risk, but it also endangers other motorists on the road,” commented Paul Greenberg, a personal injury attorney with Briskman Briskman & Greenberg, who is not involved with the case. “Unfortunately, DUI is often found to be the cause of many car accidents that result in serious injuries or death.”

State troopers said the collision occurred on Interstate-94 at 111th Street. Smith, a father of three, was transported to Roseland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspected drunk driver left the scene of the accident. Police officers later located his vehicle close to the northbound Stony Island Feeder ramp. The 42-year-old man received medical treatment at a hospital.

Authorities initially filed aggravated DUI resulting in death charges against the driver. However, they later backtracked on those comments and said the motorcycle accident was still under investigation.

Smith’s girlfriend Hunt said the car that hit Smith sped past her with just three wheels. A wheel was torn off the vehicle due to the substantial force of the crash. Smith was lying in a ditch and the motorcycle was in fragments after the accident.

“Anyone who has been injured in a motorcycle accident or any other type of motor vehicle collision should speak to an attorney about the possibility of getting compensation for their injuries,” said Greenberg. “The attorney will help you hold the responsible party accountable for their actions.”
